HOW WE FOUND THIS LAND
Tipped by a friend - who thought directly of us! - we visited this amazing almost 9 hectares (22 acres) parcel for sale. The property is situated on a totally separate hill side and has its own valley. It's quiet and safe .
The terrain looks already like an oasis, with many hectares of olive trees, almond trees, fruit trees, a vineyard, vegetable gardens and grass lands. It has its own water source with enough fresh water for the year round. Its 250m drive way that leads to a car park. Next to it there is a nice brick house, with tap water and electricity from the grid. Aside there is a little ruin waiting to be rebuilt. The estate is on walking distance to Orgiva and is fairly easy to access. Which of course makes all kinds of social activities possible.
The land is located in Southern Spain, in Alpujarra mountains, at walking distance to the alternative town of Orgiva. Since forty years many foreigners have settled down in or near by, to live and work together, to start alternative schools, and have their houses built with creativity and beauty. As they make up almost half of the population, the town has three health food shops, a weekly market with local food and twice a month free market on which you can find the most amazing things for small money. There is also midwife school with birth temple or Orgiva Consciente group with La Fuente meditation and satsang center and many more. Discovering all of the tastes of region can take long time 😉
The nearest big city is Granada with a strong Moorish influence, cave houses and the Alhambra castles: a UNESCO World Heritage Monument.
The 88,000m² property is on itself a hill with two natural riverbeds fencing it off in the south. It can be seen as 4 types of terrain:
2,5 hectares are terraces of fertile ground with olive, almond and other fruit trees. Here is an oasis of shadow, that could be used to build our community spaces, our houses. We guess most people will pick the terraces for their private plot of land on which to build their dwelling.
3,5 hectares are gently sloped grass land that can be transformed to terraces by fertilizing with drip irrigation. On top of the hill we might create a pond as a water storage and ‘swirl’ water ways can be made to keep the soil.
2,2 hectare is more steep hill, overgrown with bushes of rosemary and thyme. We would like to reserve this as bee sanctuary of flowers for our bee keeping.
1500m² of vineyard with special selected grapes from France. Yes, we could make our own wine from the more than 300 grapevines!
GIFT OF ABUNDANCE
The many trees on the land yield a yearly harvest, that we will need to work on together and create communal income from. As the trees have not been maintained properly for about six years, they need to be pruned to get back to full harvest in a few years. We think we need to get organic certification to guarantee high quality and get a good price for the many products.
Alongside the bottom of the estate stand about fifty huge Eucalyptus trees, offering shadow and blocking the winds. At an altitude of about 500m above sea level land has a moderately warm mountain climate. Almost anything can grow abundantly in this subtropical climate. The hill side is south faced, with easy to walk gentle slopes. It is naturally fenced by two dry overgrown valleys, but there is plenty of water underground.
The soil is mainly sandy with lots of small stone pebbles, but no big rocks.
The land is independent from irrigation water from outside, having its own water source: an officially drilled well, with a submerged pump and tubes running currently over two hectares of the land. At present the place has grid electricity and tap water. But in some years, finances allowing us, we could invest in alternative solar energy and our own filter system for drinking water.
On the land there is currently one small house in pretty good state, this will be a house for M&A and will also serve as the community office. It has a tool shed and is a great place to start settling from.
Without concrete foundation no formal building regulations apply. It should be perfectly possible to create on the land many dwellings, where people can live in.
The climate is mild, so the mind can go wild, on yurts, domes, tipi’s, straw bale houses, tree houses, suspended houses - removable structures, officially. We can see if there are ways and regulations for earth-ships and underground houses.
To create source of income and cultivate the land. This is just a propositions. Everyone joining in is welcome to share their own ideas. In a process of co-creation we will build our community together.
We can build our own ‘carpentry yurts’, this after a model that TomTom has developed. He is a local yurt builder and ower friend. His yurts are build up all over Spain and Portugal and we have the permission and knowledge to make them. This also involves canvas sewing work. We can build them for community, guest houses or for ourselves. But we will continue the business and build yurts for sale to create communal income and jobs.
Amiel is 3th generation beekeeper and Melchior is apprentice. On the land we plan to dedicate 2,2 hectare of land for bee keeping and build on an other piece a dedicated special work space for all the equipment, honey extractors, etc. This with a private business that can involve and give jobs to the community. The breeding and selling of special race bee queens also contributes greatly to the very existence and maintaining of the bee population. This in times where it is a question of survival of the bee population in the world can be of great help.
The land has more than 300 fruit baring trees. Olives, almonds, 'grapes', oranges, figs, apples, pears and others.
They yield a yearly harvest, that we will need to work on together and create communal income from. As the trees have not been maintained properly for about six years, they need to be pruned to get back to full harvest in a few years. We think we need to get organic certification to guarantee high quality and get a good price for the many products.
